Inlays/Onlays treatment at Maypole Dental Surgery

Inlays/Onlays

Conservative restoration for damaged teeth. More than a filling, less than a crown.

What are Inlays & Onlays?

Inlays and onlays (sometimes called partial crowns) are custom-made restorations used to repair teeth with moderate decay or damage. While an inlay fits within the grooves of your tooth, an onlay covers one or more of the tooth's cusps (the raised points). They are the ideal middle-ground when a filling isn't enough, but a full crown would remove too much healthy tooth structure.

Inlays and onlays preserve more of your natural tooth while providing excellent strength and protection.

Tooth Conservation

Preserves more healthy tooth structure than a full crown.

Superior Strength

Stronger than composite fillings for large cavities.

Precision Fit

Custom-made in a dental laboratory for an exact, comfortable fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Inlays fit within the points (cusps) of the tooth. Whereas an onlay extends over one or more cusps, providing broader coverage and for teeth requiring enhanced reinforcement

We typically use tooth-coloured porcelain or ceramic for a natural appearance and excellent durability. Composite resin and gold are also options, each with their own advantages depending on your needs and preferences.

With proper care and regular check-ups, ceramic onlays typically last 10-15 years or longer. Their durability often exceeds that of traditional fillings, making them a sound long-term investment.

Onlays are more conservative than crowns, preserving more of your natural tooth structure. If the tooth is not damaged enough to require full coverage, an onlay provides excellent strength while keeping healthy enamel intact.

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel any pain. You may experience mild sensitivity for a few days after the onlay is bonded, but this typically resolves quickly.

At the first visit, we prepare the tooth and take precise impressions. The onlay is then custom-crafted in a dental laboratory for optimal fit and aesthetics. At the second visit, we bond it permanently in place.
